Jesse James

Here's a bit of audio of a post Boxing Day jam that my brother and I managed to squeeze in amidst the festivities. Jesse James was one of the first tunes that I learned on the banjo and recently i'd stopped playing it, but my brother is getting keen on the mandolin and recently we've started playing a few old tunes that suit the two instruments.

Mandolin

I borrowed my brothers Stagg mandolin after being consigned to third banjo on our ongoing quest to find a band set up for 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown'. And I quite like it.

There are some remarkably simple chords G, D, C, F and some horrible ones - most of the rest, except Em.

So the plan is keep it simple and keep it in G or C, so here's Soldier's Joy in D!

Calling all Fiddlers

Stan writes:

Hey Andrew,

I'm not sure how I picked up on your blog. I too am a regular In the Dock attendee but the main purpose of this contact is something other. Recently I have teamed up playing guitar with a gentlemen banjo/mando player from the hill country near Stokesley and we're on the look out for another player to join our efforts, something like a fiddler, concertina or even whistle.
This sort of thing is new to us both, my friend has a history of playing for dancers, morris etc. whereas I've done mainly bass playing for blues and country bands. We're both of a certain age and are doing british and american folk tunes but not too sure for what purpose.
If you are acquainted with any players who may fit the bill above please refer them on to me. Someone has mentioned a players' night starting up in January at Bagby Airfield, maybe we'll go an long and see if we can find anyone interested.

Thanks for reading.

S

Thanks for dropping me a line. Fiddlers seem to be in short supply round here, wouldn't mind finding one myself! If anyone is interested contact Stan - stan.robinson@live.com

Good luck, maybe have a beer at the next In the Dock?

Rachel Harrington and Zac Borden

Saw Rachel Harrington and Zac Borden at In The Dock, Thirsk last night, they were great. Rachel has an amazing voice and Zac played some fantastic mandolin during a set were they played their own songs and a couple of covers. Great night, catch em if you can.

Jeff Davis
Old-time songs and music from North America with fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin

Jeff Davis is one of those musicians who makes everything look easy. He plays superb old-time fiddle, is a master of clawhammer banjo and just as good on guitar, mandolin or mandocello, without ever striving too hard for showy licks or empty virtuosity. His singing, based on long immersion in the styles of the old singers is truly timeless, conjuring vividly the world of the cowboy or the Civil War soldier.
Jeff Davis - Shortnin Bread

Jeff has an unusual and refreshing repertoire that includes songs and music from New England and the American West, as well as the more common Southern mountain material. His performances range from Appalachian ballads to Long Island fiddle tunes, songs of the civil war to African-American-style banjo-picking.
